Hiking socks vs ski socks: can you use one for the other?

Ski socks are over-the-calf and thin over the shin, where a stiff ski boot presses, with little padding underfoot. Hiking socks put their cushion underfoot, where you walk. An over-the-calf hiking sock can work in ski boots; a ski sock makes a poor hiking sock.

Where the padding goes

A ski boot presses on the shin and calf, so ski socks pad the shin and keep the foot thin for a snug boot. A hiking boot presses underfoot, so hiking socks pad the sole.

Height

Ski socks are always over-the-calf to reach above the boot. The over-the-calf hiking socks here, such as Darn Tough’s Mountaineering, are the ones to try in ski boots.

Using hiking socks for skiing

A thick, full-cushion hiking sock can make a fitted ski boot too tight; choose a lighter one if your boots are snug.

Using ski socks for hiking

With little padding underfoot and a long cuff, a ski sock makes a poor hiking sock for long days on trail.
