Merino walking socks: every model sold in the UK, with its merino share

146 walking and hiking socks from the makers’ UK shops contain merino, from 18 to 80% of the blend. 89 of them are half or more merino, 32 are merino blends with 30 to 49% merino, 6 have less than 30% merino and 19 are layered socks with merino in one layer. None is pure merino, so compare the rest of the blend, the padding and the care as well.

The highest merino shares

The thick boot socks carry the most: Icebreaker’s men’s Hike+ Mountaineer Mid Calf is 80% merino, Smartwool’s Mountaineer Classic Edition crews 74%, and Darn Tough’s Mountaineering socks 73%. Everyday walking socks carry less: Darn Tough’s Hiker 1466 is 61% merino. Sort the list by merino share to see every sock in order.

What the rest of the blend does

Nylon (polyamide) makes up most of the rest, for strength, with a few per cent of elastane or Lycra for stretch. Bridgedale’s Merino Performance boot socks are 18% merino plus 26% other wool, so their wool comes to 44% in all. More merino does not on its own make a sock warmer, quicker to dry or longer lasting; the knit, the padding and the fit count as much. Whether a sock can be pure wool has its own page: are merino socks 100% wool?

Wool socks not counted here

Point6 and most of Falke’s socks print “wool” or “virgin wool” in their blend tables without saying how much of it is merino, so this list leaves them out; they are on the Falke and Point6 pages with their whole blends. Falke’s TK2 Explore Wool and TK1 Adventure Wool are in it: their pages say their 70% is merino. Sealskinz’s waterproof socks have merino in the inner lining only and are listed with their layers, not given a whole-sock share.

Washing merino socks

Each maker words it differently: Darn Tough asks for a cold, gentle wash inside out; Smartwool allows warm or cool water; Icebreaker asks for a cold wash and drying flat; Bridgedale gives a 40°C wool cycle. Darn Tough, Smartwool and Bridgedale allow a low tumble dry. The care lookup gives each model’s own instruction.
