Kids’ walking socks sold in the UK, with children’s UK sizes

10 walking socks for children from the makers’ UK shops, each with its maker’s children’s UK sizes. Find the size in the chart of the exact sock, then check that the cuff clears the top of their boots.

All 10 socks that qualify

Chosen by the makers’ published facts, one sock per brand first.

Children’s UK sizes, maker by maker

Darn Tough’s kids’ chart runs S (UK 8.5–11), M (11.5–2) and L (2.5–5.5). Smartwool’s runs XS (UK 5–7.5), S (8–10.5), M (11–13.5) and L (1–4.5), and its kids’ walking socks are sold in S to L. Falke sizes its children’s socks by EU size, from 23–26 (UK 6–8.5) to 35–38 (UK 3–5). Children’s UK sizes run up to 13.5 and then start again at 1, so a Darn Tough M covers a child’s 11.5 up to size 2.

The makers do not use the same steps, so a child who wears a Smartwool M can need a Darn Tough S or M. Each sock’s page shows its maker’s chart as the UK shop prints it.

A cuff that clears the boot

Darn Tough’s kids’ micro crews average 15.2 cm (6 in) from heel to cuff on its US pages and 15.5 cm on its UK shop, which says they sit just above a child’s walking boot; its Quest Quarter is lower, for trainers and low walking shoes. Smartwool’s kids’ socks are crews, with no height published. Falke lists both its TK2 Kids and its TK2 Short Kids at calf length, although the Short’s name suggests a lower cuff, so check it against the boot on the first wear.

Wool, padding and shape

Darn Tough’s and Smartwool’s kids’ socks are 45 to 63% merino, with nylon and elastane; padding runs from none (Darn Tough’s Field Trip) to full (Darn Tough’s Hill Topper and two Smartwool crews). Falke’s two are mostly polypropylene and acrylic, with 20% and 16% wool, medium-strong padding and a separate left and right foot. Read the whole blend on each sock’s page.

Then choose the sock itself

Pick the cuff for their boots or trainers and the padding for the room inside them, then the size from that sock’s own chart. Put two side by side in compare, or see how cuffs differ in the sock height guide.
