Women’s versions can be shorter in the cuff

Darn Tough cuts its women’s socks shorter than its men’s: its women’s micro crews average 19.1 cm (7.5 in) from heel to cuff against 21.6 cm (8.5 in) for the men’s, and its women’s boot socks 26.7 cm (10.5 in) against 27.9 cm (11 in). The blend can differ as well: the women’s Hiker 1903 is 59% merino, the men’s Hiker 1466 61%. Each sock’s page gives its cuff height where the maker publishes one; hold it against the collar of your own boots.

UK sizes in the women’s charts

Smartwool’s unisex chart and Point6’s start at UK 2, Darn Tough’s women’s chart and Falke’s women’s sizes at UK 2.5, and Bridgedale’s women’s chart, Icebreaker’s and Sealskinz’s at UK 3. At the top, Darn Tough’s women’s chart reaches UK 11.5 (its XL, on selected models only), Falke’s women’s sizes UK 9.5, and Bridgedale’s and Icebreaker’s women’s charts UK 8.5. Larger feet fit the unisex and men’s charts. The size finder opens on UK sizes; choose the exact model, not only the brand.

Unisex socks count too

The list includes unisex and adult socks whose charts print women’s sizes: much of Smartwool’s range, Sealskinz’s socks and Point6’s. A women’s label sets the maker’s cut and chart, not who may wear the sock, so start from the chart that covers your shoe size.

Then choose the sock itself

A women’s or unisex label says nothing about padding, blend or warmth. Pick the cuff for your boots or trail shoes, the padding for the room inside them, and read the whole blend, as for any other sock. Put two side by side in compare, or see how cuffs differ in the sock height guide.
