Darn your hiking socks or claim the guarantee? Each brand’s promise compared

If the brand guarantees its socks against wear, claim it: Darn Tough, Farm to Feet, Feetures, Point6, PAKA and Swiftwick replace worn socks under their own conditions, and Fox River gives credit for a pair that doesn’t hold up. If not, or if the guarantee has run out, a small hole at the heel or toe can be darned in ten minutes.

Check the guarantee first

Darn Tough promises to replace its socks for life; Feetures, Point6, PAKA and Swiftwick offer lifetime guarantees with their own conditions; Farm to Feet has a satisfaction replacement, and Fox River gives a credit worth any pair that doesn’t hold up. Minus33 covers its New Hampshire-made socks against early wear for five years. Smartwool’s guarantee runs two years, and Injinji’s and Icebreaker’s one year.

Some guarantees cover only manufacturing faults, not wear: Thorlo’s and Bridgedale’s lifetime guarantees, Wigwam’s two-year guarantee and Woolx’s defect replacement. CEP guarantees the compression of its socks for six months. The guarantees page has each brand’s exact terms and how to claim.

Each maker’s guarantee, as its policy page describes it.

When darning makes sense

A small hole, a thin patch at the heel, a sock outside its guarantee or a pair you would rather keep: darn it. Use wool yarn for a wool sock, and a darning egg or a light bulb to hold the shape.

How to darn a hole, briefly

Turn the sock inside out and trim loose threads. Stitch a ring of small running stitches around the hole into sound fabric. Lay parallel threads across the hole, then weave across them at right angles, over and under, until the hole is filled. Keep it flat: a lump under the heel will rub.

When to retire a pair

Holes in many places, fabric worn thin across the sole, or elastic that no longer keeps the sock up. A sock that slides down or bunches is a blister risk; replace it.
